About This Game World-famous red-haired adventurer Adol Christin awakens in the unfamiliar land of Celceta, remembering nothing more than his own name. Bereft of his past, Adol explores the town he happened to wander into, searching for any clues at all to his identity. Joined by a thief who claims to have spent some time at his side these past weeks, the young adventurer helps rescue doomed miners from a collapse – an act which ingratiates him to the local Romun Army general. Impressed with their skills, the pair is enlisted to explore the Great Forest of Celceta and map its vast expanses – a task which many have attempted in the past, but from which none have ever returned alive.Eager to unravel the mystery of his past and the cause of his predicament, Adol sets off with his new-old thief friend, Duren, to chart the untamed wilderness that claimed his memories. Along the way he meets numerous other individuals who seem to have encountered him before, and must carefully determine who among them can be trusted.Developer Nihon Falcom originally revisited the land and characters of Japanese cult favorite Ys IV in 2012 with Ys: Memories of Celceta on the PlayStation Vita, and the game found its way to North America the following year. I completed this game on nightmare difficulty, which isn't the same as like.. Ys Origin or Oath in Felghana nightmare - those games were actually good. In this game, the winning strategy for pretty much all end-game stuff is to stack 99 Roda Droplet things, whatever the revival item was called, and brute force your way through *everything*. Dodging is all well and good, but it matters less in the late game than it does early game. The very first boss on nightmare is harder than the final boss because you don't have limitless resources. The flash guard + flash dodge maneuver is basically your currency until you're not poor anymore. Once you have enough money to stack 99 revivals, you can do whatever you damn well please. Compare that to Oath and Origin where the only revival item was that one-time revival necklace which you generally saved for the final boss. On top of that, Oath and Origin had wayyyyy better combat mechanics, better bosses, better story, better everything. I even prefer the music in those two games. They even managed to make Adol annoying because Adol only understands two things: "good guy" and "bad guy". When there's a good guy around, he has questions, because Adol is like an OCD case where he has to ask a hundred and three questions before he can safely put on his shoes. And when there's a bad guy, he gets maaad! He's obviously not straight, as he gets along better with the harp-playing fruitcake Remnos than he does with all the women fauning over him. The game is cringy from the beginning, all the way up to the point where Frodol throws the One Mask into the volcano.I wish they would stop making this ♥♥♥♥ing game. Even if they used the same exact graphical design (sprites + models) as they did in Origin, I'd like more of that. I'd pay $100 for that. Instead I get Seven, Celceta and Lacrimosa of Dana (which to be fair, I haven't given Lacrimosa a chance yet). This three-party-member system they have with no jumping and casual timings, frankly, stinks. They had the winning formula before and threw it away for a combat system that should've stayed on the PSP where it belongs.. The series that needs to be played for all JRPG fans. Enjoyed every stories the game give. I played the game a lot on the Vita, sadly not being able to finish it before I gave up on that sinking ship of a platform (thanks Sony) I've only played a a few hours at this time of writing the review here but so far it's a pretty straight forward port- in ways. Let me explain, the game's got some good options to tweak graphics and even has an unlocked 120fps+ option which is nice to see. Lets you even customize the buttons you're getting prompted with, 360/PS3/etc which is fairly rare, so they certainly put in the effort to say the least in that regard. Where it's a straight forward port is kinda where I'm not sure I'm super happy with. The interface is gigantic on the screen, none of the scaling is altered and it's all pretty low-res since it was on the Vita- so things are both large for the small screen AND for touch controls (I haven't tested if touch works in this). So everything feels kinda huge on screen and the camera is very zoomed in- in some spots. Camera control is also very limited, you can zoom in and out like the vita version. There is no adjusting how the camera is angled. So if you don't like what you see in screenshots? Well you can't change that so, take that how you will. The game itself has aged and show's that it's not very refined, this shows a lot in the opening cutscene where walk cycles don't match up with how the characters move, animation in these scenes is very simplistic but get the job done. Okay, so there's a lot of negative there, is this worth your money? I would say yes. The presentation of the story is a bit wonky but it gets the job done. The combat is fast and starts off simple but opens up a lot more as you progress. Playing on Hard Mode is where you're gonna get more tension and fun out of the gameplay since it will force you to not rely on taking hits but instead flash guard/dodging (guarding/rolling at the last minute to slow-mo the enemies so you can omni-slash the crap out of them) and your characters unique skills. Each character has their own perks, sword, blunt, spear, daggers all play into the enemies weaknesses that'll stun/kill them faster- all of this is passive, just need to let the character do their thing or switch to them yourself. Characters all have their own skill that you activate that take from a shared MP pool you refill by attacking- letting your character wait a second will net you a larger sum of MP restored. So, combats fun, frantic and deep enough that it's not just a button masher. Characters with you are also active in combat, you can set them to passive if you fear they're going to get their face smashed but that's not TOO much a worry since the game gives some leeway, they can't seem to be taken down past 1HP, so if you get hit with a big AOE, your allies might survive with 1HP because of this, letting you run for safety. You also gather stuff for buffing weapons while you're out, your characters will thankfully both point out these gathering spots AND they will harvest it themselves. It's a fun game, the story isn't going to win any awards as it's fairly simple, predictable and straight forward. You a warrior with amnesia is trying to figure out how you lost your memory as you explore the place you lost it. A twist mid way through lets you know how it happened and there's more twists to be had. I called most of them and this was my first Ys game so it's not so much a surprise. Also, apparently this is a remake of a remake. It was a SNES game, then remade on PS2 then remade for Vita and now ported years later to PC. WEIRD, but all fairly different apparently. Either way, if this is your first Ys game you're not missing much from what I understand. It's the same character, but just a different adventure and I don't think there's any references to previous ones. I only saw ONE reference in Ys VIII to this game and that's about it. What you need to know: Adol is an adventurer who winds up in a sticky spot and has to adventure his way out. Sometimes his friend Dogi is there to do stuff. Also because I didn't have a good point to mention it, the music in this game is really, really good. Fits the fast paced adventure, all tunes are pretty great. I had to mention this because it's apparently a sin to not mention the great tracks in these games. I guess since the series has been fairly obscure for decades the fans gotta have something to cling to, which makes sense. It's been around since the ...Turbo Grafix 16/PC Engine and stayed obscure till this game/Ys VII so yeah I'd be annoyed too. ...Much like Phantasy Star's RPG series (1-4) being obscure despite being out the same week as Final Fantasy. Ahem, yes, rant over, game worth getting? Yes.. Fast hack and slash+ Fairly easy+ Interesting enough story and characters8/10. There's a rhythm to the newest Ys games, and it's pretty consistent for me. I really enjoy the beginning, I'm okay with the middle, and I can't even begin to give a ♥♥♥♥ enough to get to the end. It's usually right around the time they give you the second "slashing"-type character that you'll never give a ♥♥♥♥ about because you spent the entire game with Adol and he's the main character so why would you want to trade him out for some random person you just met, and you need him in the party to do the memories thing anyway. Right around when they introduce them is when I stop caring.I think Ys 7 was the last game where they didn't throw in two of every damage-type-dealing-character, and I really liked Ys 7 with minor exception. Personally I hope they go back to that eventually. I don't need a big cast of playable characters; give me three, at most, and definitely don't expect me to switch out Adol for anyone else. As long as the three characters continue to gain new and interesting moves and items, that'll hold my attention. As it is if I'm 35 hours into the game and you just now are giving me a new character that I have to level up and buy equipment for and grind skills with? I don't care about them. At all.. There are 2 things that all Falcom's YS series always have :1. Extremely good music, heck, I don't mind grinding back and forth for hours with all these well made soundtracks,2. Challenging as F*** boss battles ( especially for nightmare mode, the goons also hits hard ), it's like Dark Souls, but with japanese Anime graphicsFinally got all of the achievements. Waiting to clear the next YS game!. I was a big fan of Ys Seven on the PSP, and as such was quite interested in trying this one out. When I had, I was glad a few years had passed in between them. Memories of Celceta feels much like a direct sequel to Seven rather than a distinct entry in a series. It is very similar in both gameplay and aesthetics. There is a lot of rolling around dodging, slamming the attack buttons as the screen fills up with all sorts of damage numbers and when enemies die masses of shiny coins and materials go flying everywhere. This frantic action is as enjoyable as always, but it took a number of steps backwards from Seven in my opinion.Seven was a fairly challenging game for myself, so I started Celceta on normal. It quickly became far too easy, and even the bosses were trivial by the middle of the game. I did not get a game over a single time during my playthrough. The system of certain attack types for certain enemy types has returned, but it is far less necessary due to this lack of challenge. I played as Adol for the vast majority of the game as I was doing enough damage I felt no reason to change, and mooks that resisted sword attacks seemed to be reduced in number. The bosses were lacking inspiration as well. There was not much of strategy involved in beating them, and the ability to relentlessly spam flash guard on any and all attacks made avoiding damage trivial. The plot is pretty typical fare. Not poor, but not a masterpiece by any means. It really lacks a strong villain, but manages to keep itself compelling by a pretty decent use of the ubiquitous amnesia trope. Most things are initially a mystery and you have to progress to gain a good understanding of the situation. The colourful cast of characters helps, as does a good translation. There are countless things to collect, monsters to kill, quests to complete (even though some are rather irritating and dull), and a good number of achievements that will require a couple playthroughs of the game to complete. My first go round took around 23 hours and I only completed just over half of the achievements.I had zero technical issues or crashes with the game. It doesn't look all that impressive, being a port of a PSVita game, but it runs quite well and there are a host of graphical options to spice things up. Saving and loading times are almost instantaneous. In summation: I enjoyed the game. The combat felt lacking at times, there's a pretty good amount of content for a fair price, it ran very well. I'd rate it about a 7.5/10. Good for fans of the series, fans of JRPGs, action-RPG fans, folks with short attention spans like myself who constantly need some stimulation like countless more enemies and constant item collection. If you aren't one of those groups, I'm not sure I would expect the game to blow you away.
